YouTube’s updated monetization requirements: what you need to know

Advertising

In order to make money on YouTube, content creators must meet certain eligibility requirements to participate in the YouTube Partner Program (YPP). As of 2021, YouTube has updated these requirements, which means that some creators may need to alter their content or tactics to continue earning money on the platform.

Here’s what you need to know about the updated YouTube monetization requirements.

1. Channel membership and merchandise eligibility

Previously, creators needed to have at least 30,000 subscribers to be eligible for the channel membership and merchandise features. As of 2021, these requirements have been lowered to 1,000 subscribers.

Channel memberships allow viewers to join a creator’s channel and pay a monthly fee for exclusive perks, while merchandise allows creators to sell their own branded products directly on their channel.

2. Watch time requirements

In addition to subscriber requirements, creators now need to have at least 4,000 hours of watch time in the past 12 months and 1,000 subscribers to be eligible for YPP. This is a slight increase from the previous requirement of 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 hours of watch time in total.

Creators who are not yet eligible for YPP can still monetize their content through other means, such as affiliate marketing or sponsorships.

3. Advertiser-friendly content

YouTube has also updated its guidelines for advertiser-friendly content. Content that is considered “not suitable” for all advertisers will automatically be demonetized or receive limited ads.

This includes content that contains profanity, violence, sexually suggestive content, controversial or sensitive subjects, or harmful or dangerous acts.

4. Original content

YouTube is also putting a greater emphasis on original content that is unique to the platform. Creators who simply upload videos that are copied or re-uploaded from other sources may have trouble meeting the new monetization requirements.

Creators are encouraged to produce original content that is engaging, informative, and entertaining for their viewers.

In conclusion, the updated YouTube monetization requirements mean that creators must produce high-quality, original content that is monetizable and advertiser-friendly. These changes could have an impact on some creators, but for those who are dedicated to their craft and are willing to work hard, there are still plenty of opportunities to earn money on the platform.
